The Sacred
Groves and the Grandmothers
A photo exhibition in the gallery of Rantakasarmi,
Sveaborg, Helsinki 3.5-28.5
Ulla Lehtinen from the Finnish Union
of Kindred Peoples Associations visited last summer together with a writer
Olli Tammilehto the sacred groves of Mari El, Udmurtia, Estonia and Finland.
They photographed the groves and the nature ceremonies hold in them as well
as the local village people. In Finland many of the names still carry the
word "hiisi", the old Finnish word
for sacred grove. The exhibition is thus also a journey to the old
cultural roots of the Finns. The exhibition pays special homage to the
grandmothers who have kept the tradition alive and transmitted it to the
younger generations.
