The Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples MAFUN is an international union of non-governmental youth organizations of Uralic (Finno-Ugric and Samoyed) peoples. By today the Association has 39 member organisations representing the Finno-Ugric youth from Hungary, Finland, Estonia and other countries. The Association's main objective is to preserve and develop Uralic cultures and languages, as well as disseminate information on them. The main task is to establish contacts and enhance cooperation of the Finno-Ugric youth through all kinds of youth's actions.

MAFUN started on the ruins of the Soviet Union, when it became possible for peoples to exercise their right to self-determination and self-government. It was understood that the NGO level work is crucially needed for survival of our peoples. The Finno-Ugric youth also established their organizations. The first Finno-Ugric Youth conference took place in summer 1990 in Yoshkar-Ola, Republic of Mari El, and decided to establish MAFUN. The Association opened a Bureau in Helsinki, Finland in Autumn 2001. The Association now has its internet sites at the addresses http://mafun.org/ and http://www.mafun.ru/. In the year 2000 at the MAFUN V Congress in Helsinki, Finland, it was decided to revise the strategies of the youth movements. In the year 2003 at the VI Congress in Yoshkar-Ola, Republic of Mari-El, the new Statutes and Rules of Procedure of the Association were adopted and the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples of the Russian Federation was created.

The Association takes part in the work of the IV World congress of Finno-Ugric peoples, 15–19th August 2004 in Tallinn, Estonia. All twenty members of the MAFUN delegation to the congress are less than 30 years old and active in member organizations. The regular extended MAFUN Board session is held in Tallinn, 10–14th August 2004 directly before the congress, where the conception for participation in the congress will be discussed. The MAFUN Board Chairman makes a speech at the opening plenary session of the congress. MAFUN representatives are appointed to make the reports "Mass media" and "Youth's social adaptation" at the section sessions of the IV World congress of Finno-Ugric peoples. Besides that, the Board representatives take part in preparation of the congress resolution project.
